Inlays and Onlays in Encinitas – Durable, Conservative Restorations for Damaged Teeth

At Gregory Skeens D.D.S. – Encinitas Family Dentistry, we’re committed to providing dental treatments that preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. When a filling isn’t enough but a full crown isn’t necessary, inlays and onlays offer the perfect balance between strength, aesthetics, and conservation.

These custom-made restorations restore damaged or decayed teeth while blending seamlessly into your smile. If you’re looking for conservative tooth restoration in Encinitas, inlays and onlays might be the right fit.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and Onlays are lab-crafted restorations made from ceramic, composite resin, or sometimes gold. They’re bonded to the tooth to repair damage that’s too extensive for a filling but doesn’t require a full dental crown.

  • A dental inlay fits within the grooves of your tooth, similar to a filling, but is stronger and more precise.
  • A dental onlay extends over one or more cusps (points) of the tooth, covering more surface area and reinforcing the tooth structure.

Both options are designed to preserve your natural tooth while restoring full function and appearance.

When Are Inlays and Onlays Used?

Inlays and onlays are often recommended when:

  • A tooth has moderate to large decay
  • A previous filling has failed or cracked
  • There’s too much damage for a new filling, but not enough for a crown
  • You want a more durable, longer-lasting restoration
  • You want to replace metal fillings with a more aesthetic option

They are most commonly used on molars and premolars, where chewing forces are greatest.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Patients choose inlays and onlays in Encinitas for their durability, aesthetics, and conservative approach to tooth restoration.

Here are just a few benefits:

  • Stronger than fillings – More resistant to wear and fracture
  • Preserve healthy tooth structure – Less invasive than crowns
  • Custom-made for a precise fit
  • Natural look and feel – Especially with ceramic or composite materials
  • Long-lasting – Often lasting 10–15 years or more with proper care

These restorations provide a perfect balance of function and appearance—making them a smart investment in your long-term dental health.

Inlays and Onlays

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure

Getting an inlay or onlay typically takes two visits, unless you’re a candidate for a same-day restoration using our in-office CEREC technology.

Step 1: Diagnosis and Preparation

We’ll begin with a thorough exam and digital X-rays to evaluate the extent of the damage. If an inlay or onlay is appropriate, we’ll numb the area and remove any decay or old filling material.

Step 2: Digital Impressions

We take precise digital impressions of the tooth, which are used to design your custom restoration. You’ll receive a temporary filling or onlay to protect the tooth while your final restoration is crafted.

Step 3: Placement

At your second visit, we’ll bond your custom inlay or onlay into place, check your bite, and polish it for a smooth, natural finish. If using CEREC, we may be able to design, mill, and place your restoration in just one appointment.

Inlays and Onlays vs. Fillings and Crowns

Fillings are best for small cavities. Crowns are used when a tooth is significantly weakened or decayed. Inlays and onlays are ideal for the “in-between” cases—when you need more support than a filling can provide but want to avoid removing additional tooth structure required for a crown.

We always aim to use the most conservative option possible while ensuring long-term durability and protection. Dr. Skeens will explain your options clearly and help you make the right choice for your smile.

Caring for Inlays and Onlays

Like all dental work, inlays and onlays need proper care to last. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, they can serve you well for many years.

Here’s how to protect your restoration:

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily
  • Avoid chewing hard objects like ice or pens
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks
  • Visit us every six months for cleanings and exams
  • Let us know if you feel discomfort or if your bite changes

In most cases, inlays and onlays feel so natural, you’ll forget they’re even there.

Frequently Asked Questions – Inlays and Onlays

An inlay fits within the grooves of your tooth and does not cover any cusps. An onlay extends over one or more cusps, offering more coverage and strength. Both are custom-made and bonded to your tooth.
With proper care, inlays and onlays can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Their longevity depends on the material used, your oral hygiene, and your bite habits.
In many cases, yes. They’re stronger, more durable, and better suited for larger areas of decay or wear. They also fit more precisely because they’re custom-made.
Most dental insurance plans cover inlays and onlays similarly to crowns, especially when they are used to treat decay or damage. We’ll help you verify your benefits and estimate your out-of-pocket cost before beginning treatment.
No. When made with tooth-colored materials like ceramic or composite resin, they blend in beautifully with your natural tooth, making them virtually invisible.
