Composite Fillings

Composite Fillings in Encinitas – Natural-Looking Repair for Cavities and Minor Damage

At Gregory Skeens D.D.S. – Encinitas Family Dentistry, we believe dental work should not only protect your teeth but also look and feel completely natural. That’s why we use tooth-colored composite fillings in Encinitas to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, wear, or minor fractures—without the noticeable metal.

If you’re dealing with a cavity, cracked tooth, or worn enamel, composite fillings offer a strong, aesthetic, and conservative solution that blends seamlessly with your natural smile.

What Are Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings are made of a durable, tooth-colored resin material that bonds directly to your natural tooth structure. Unlike traditional silver (amalgam) fillings, composite restorations are designed to match the exact shade of your tooth, making them virtually invisible once placed.

They are commonly used for:

  • Treating small to mid-sized cavities
  • Replacing old metal fillings
  • Repairing chipped, cracked, or worn teeth
  • Enhancing the cosmetic appearance of front teeth

Whether you’re getting your first filling or updating older dental work, composite fillings in Encinitas provide a safe, long-lasting solution with minimal impact on the look of your smile.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Choosing tooth-colored fillings in Encinitas comes with several important benefits:

  • Natural appearance – Custom-shaded to match your tooth color
  • Conservative treatment – Requires less removal of healthy tooth structure
  • Strong and durable – Resistant to fractures and everyday wear
  • Bonded directly – Helps reinforce the strength of the tooth
  • Mercury-free and biocompatible – A healthier option for many patients

Many of our patients prefer composite fillings not just for cosmetic reasons, but because they feel better about having a metal-free, more modern restoration.

The Composite Filling Procedure

Getting a composite filling is a simple, efficient process that can usually be completed in a single visit.

Step 1: Exam and Diagnosis

We begin by identifying the area of decay or damage using a visual exam and digital X-rays.

Step 2: Anesthesia

To ensure your comfort, we numb the area with a local anesthetic.

Step 3: Tooth Preparation

We remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and prepare the surface to receive the filling.

Step 4: Layered Composite Application

The resin is applied in layers, with each one cured (hardened) using a special light.

Step 5: Shaping and Polishing

Once the final layer is set, the filling is shaped and polished to match your natural bite and tooth texture.

You’ll be able to chew and speak normally right after your visit, and in most cases, sensitivity resolves within a few days.

When Are Composite Fillings the Best Choice?

Composite dental fillings are ideal for:

  • Small to medium-sized cavities in both front and back teeth
  • Patients who want a more aesthetic alternative to silver fillings
  • Individuals who are replacing worn or leaking amalgam restorations
  • Teeth that are chipped or slightly misshapen

If a tooth has extensive damage or structural weakness, we may recommend a dental crown or inlay/onlay instead. During your exam, Dr. Skeens will explain your options and help you choose the most appropriate treatment.

Replacing Old Fillings with Composite

If you have old metal fillings that are worn, cracked, or causing sensitivity, we can replace them with tooth-colored composite fillings for a more comfortable, natural look. Many of our patients choose this option for cosmetic or health-related reasons.

We’ll examine your existing fillings and let you know which ones can be safely and effectively updated.

Caring for Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are durable, but like any dental restoration, they still need good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to stay in top condition.

To help your filling last as long as possible:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to prevent decay around the edges of the filling
  • Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails
  • Schedule routine cleanings and exams every six months
  • Let us know if you experience unusual sensitivity or pain

With proper care, composite fillings can last 7–10 years or longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the treatment. Some, like teeth whitening or bonding, can be completed in a single visit, while others like ClearCorrect may take several months. We’ll provide a timeline during your consultation.

Most cosmetic treatments are minimally invasive and involve little to no discomfort. We always prioritize your comfort and can discuss sedation or numbing options if needed.

Cosmetic procedures are typically not covered by insurance, but we’ll help you understand your benefits and discuss flexible payment options to make treatment affordable.

That’s what we’re here for! Dr. Skeens will evaluate your smile, discuss your goals, and recommend the best treatments based on your needs and preferences.

Some procedures like veneers and bonding may need maintenance over time, while aligners and whitening results can last with proper care. We’ll provide guidance on how to maintain your smile after treatment.
