At Gregory Skeens D.D.S. – Encinitas Family Dentistry, we believe that strong oral health starts with consistent, high-quality care. Our dental cleanings and exams in Encinitas are designed to keep your smile healthy, bright, and free from preventable problems. With a comfortable approach, friendly staff, and attention to detail, we make routine visits something to feel good about—not dread.

Whether you’re new to the area, overdue for a cleaning, or simply looking for a dentist you can trust, our team is here to help you feel confident in your care, every step of the way.

What Is a Dental Cleaning and Why Does It Matter?

A dental cleaning, also known as teeth cleaning, is a professional procedure that removes plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth—especially in areas your toothbrush can’t reach. It’s one of the most effective ways to prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath.

We recommend bi-annual dental cleanings in Encinitas (every six months) for most patients. These regular visits help us stay ahead of potential issues and ensure your smile stays healthy year-round.

What to Expect During Your Visit

We aim to make your dental visits smooth, educational, and personalized. During your appointment, here’s what typically happens:

Step 1: Medical and Dental History Update

We’ll review any changes in your health, medications, or dental concerns. Your comfort and safety are always our top priority.

Step 2: Comprehensive Dental Exam

Our dental exams in Encinitas include a thorough check of your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissues. We look for signs of:

  • Cavities or enamel wear
  • Gum inflammation or recession
  • Bite or alignment issues
  • Oral cancer indicators
  • Existing dental work that may need repair

Step 3: Professional Cleaning

Our hygienist gently removes plaque and tartar buildup using specialized tools. We’ll polish your teeth to remove surface stains and finish with flossing to ensure a fresh, clean feel.

Step 4: X-rays (if needed)

Depending on your age, risk factors, or any symptoms, we may recommend updated digital X-rays to catch issues we can’t see during the exam.

Benefits of Regular Dental Cleanings and Exams

When it comes to oral health, prevention is the best approach. Routine dental cleanings and exams can help:

  • Prevent cavities and gum disease
  • Remove stubborn plaque and tartar
  • Detect problems early—before they require major treatment
  • Maintain fresh breath and a polished smile
  • Support overall health, including heart and immune health
  • Save money by avoiding costly emergency treatments

Think of your six-month visit as a wellness checkup for your smile—it keeps everything on track and gives you peace of mind.

Exercise and Oral Health

Staying active supports circulation, immune function, and stress reduction—all of which contribute to better oral health. Regular exercise may help:

  • Reduce inflammation (linked to gum disease)
  • Support healing after dental procedures
  • Improve insulin sensitivity and reduce risk of diabetes-related dental issues
  • Lower cortisol levels that can impact your body’s immune response

That said, some physical habits—like clenching your jaw during high-intensity workouts or consuming sugary sports drinks—can affect your smile. If you’re active, we’ll guide you on how to protect your teeth during and after exercise.

Who Needs Bi-Annual Dental Cleanings?

Everyone! Regardless of how well you brush or floss at home, bi-annual dental cleanings in Encinitas are essential. They help address buildup in hard-to-reach areas and give us a chance to monitor your dental health.

We tailor care for every age group:

  • Children and Teens – We teach proper hygiene habits and look for developmental concerns.
  • Adults – We monitor for early signs of decay, gum disease, and wear.
  • Seniors – We check for dry mouth, root exposure, and oral health risks related to medical conditions.

  • Honest communication and education at every visit

We’re here to make you feel cared for, informed, and confident in your dental health.

How to Maintain Results Between Cleanings

We love seeing you every six months—but your daily habits play the biggest role in your dental health. Between visits, we recommend:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Flossing daily
  • Drinking water throughout the day
  • Limiting sugary or acidic snacks and drinks
  • Avoiding tobacco and vaping
  • Scheduling cleanings and exams every six months

If you ever have questions about your home care routine, our hygienist is happy to provide guidance tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions – Dental Cleaning and Exams

Most patients benefit from a cleaning every six months. Some people, especially those with gum disease or higher risk factors, may need more frequent visits.
Cleanings are generally comfortable, but if you have sensitive gums or excessive buildup, you might feel some pressure. We use gentle techniques and offer numbing if needed.
A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gum line. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is used to treat gum disease and targets areas below the gum line.
We do exams at every routine visit. X-rays are taken based on your specific needs—usually once a year or when there are concerns we can’t see during a visual exam.
Yes, most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings and exams per year. Our team can help you understand your benefits and keep care affordable.
